CHAPTER 16

Tamaska

She didn’t want to move.

Every part of her ached with a delicious rightness. When she stretched it was like a goddess must feel, or a queen. Or, perhaps mate to the alpha.

She sighed, sliding up against the heat and strength of him.

Who knew when she’d get time like this with Kodiak again? This moment was about enjoying the simple pleasures, to be together, in bed, in each other’s arms. Kodiak slept, but she couldn’t, even though hours had passed. And sleep was the last thing she wanted, anyway.

Her thoughts kept returning to what she had learned, trying to come up with alternative theories. Did the vampires truly want to change her into a weapon of chaos? Nothing else came to mind. She stretched again, his scent surrounding her. Then again how the hell could she think? Her mind was full of serotonin and Kodiak.

Kodiak stirred and kissed her. “You didn’t sleep?”

It amazed her, the depth of detail he could sense about her.

“No.”

His hand trailed from her breast to her belly. “We’ve got a big day ahead.”

“I know.” She paused. “Kodiak, I was thinking… Any ideas on how to make the vampires pay?”

“Damn I need to get up, as much as I want to say here with you.” He nuzzled her throat and she arched for him, offering that tender, vulnerable place and he growled softly. “And you, wicked Tamaska, keep making it difficult. Almost like you’re disobeying me.”

“In you leaving this bed? Fuck yes I am.” She held on to him to stop him from getting out of bed. Just a little longer.

He groaned. “Would if I could.”

She let him go, but he didn’t move and a spark of heat raced through her blood.

“Any thoughts or ideas, Kodiak?”

“A few, but we need to call a pack meeting.” He held her tight, then groaned with frustration as he pulled away from her and quickly got out of bed.

He dressed, and she indulged herself, studying how his muscles contracted and relaxed as he moved. She couldn’t believe how much better she felt after having sex with him.

Bliss vibrating through her body, she lay, still curled in last night’s towel. The last thing she wanted was to get up and to return to reality, where the leader of the vampires was hunting her. A reality where the Blood Opal was a dangerous gem, a danger specific to her because of the destruction she could unleash with it.

She took a breath. “I told you how I did research, right?”

“Ash’ll know.”

He wasn’t paying her attention and frustration welled up in her. “Kodiak. I seem to be linked to the blood opal and that’s dangerous. I don’t want to be a catalyst for terrible destruction if they get hold of me and I’m still mostly human.”

“Okay.” He picked up a T-shirt, inspected it, tossed it on the bed, and then grabbed a pair of jeans.

His mind was in a thousand other places and he barely listened to her, but she pushed forward. “Kodiak, it’s dangerous for me to remain human.
